Hello Reader,
Ever wonder why some days you’re on fire and others you can’t seem to start?
Motivation – that seemingly elusive guest that sometimes shows up to the party and other times ghosts you! But motivation isn’t that mysterious. It’s a skill you can build.
What Motivates You?
In this newsletter, we’re bridging the gap between the psychology of motivation and the power of visualization.
Because I don’t want to just talk about the psychology of motivation – I want to actually motivate you to tackle a big fat hairy goal.
One that resonates deeply with the person you want to be in your life.
The Key Drivers of Motivation
Here are what I identify as the key drivers:
1) Fear: The “away-from” motivation that keeps us safe but also keeps us small.
Fear may include popular catchphrases such as “I need enough money to pay for the mortgage” or “I’ll lose my job if I don’t …”
Fear is a primeval and necessary response to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe. It’s highly motivating in driving success – but terrible at creating long-term happiness. It leads to disconnect and burnout and as such is not a sustainable motivator, for our bodies or our careers.
2) Inspiration: The “toward” energy that sparks the initial flame.
Ever listened to a rousing keynote speech, listened to a beautiful piece of music or been transported by the power of nature? That’s the power of inspiration to elevate, energise and inspire. This state-shift is highly motivating, because it connects us with a loftier perspective, and a truth greater than our daily myopia.
3) Purpose: The North-star that keeps us motivated to stay on-course.
A sense of purpose is often bigger than our work; bigger than ourselves. Simply put, the benefit clearly outweighs the effort because it’s focused and aligned with our heart, mind and values. Purpose provides stimulation, joy and a powerful reason to keep moving forwards.
4) Progress: The dopamine hit of accomplishment that keeps the engine running.
When exercising - a “Well done – you're already halfway there” or “let’s really go for it for this next minute” is always more motivating than dwelling on the huge uphill slog ahead. By creating small wins, we flood our body with happy-chemicals and a sense of achievement that our ego loves. This is particularly handy when inspiration starts to flag or our north-star seems further away than ever. It's the small victories that keep us on the path and reinforce our commitment to keep going.
Don’t Just Think Motivation – FEEL IT!
The more we are able to align our mind and body to our goals – the more motivated we will be to achieve them.
This is why goal visualisation is so effective – because it creates a visceral connection to the goal, allowing us to:
- consciously start enjoying the outcomes as if we’ve already achieved them
- subconsciously start mapping different ways to get there – based on a very clear internal brief.
This 8-minute video below will take you on a personal journey to identify and get motivated around a key goal.
Maybe the goal is around a health-issue, or a work-project. Maybe it’s something you’ve been holding back from doing for a while now, because you just don’t have the energy or – well the motivation!
So settle back, relax and get ready to get curious, get empowered and get going!
(If you want to skip straight to the guided visualisations it's at 2.10 mins).
